When we were deciding on getting a new dog -with the intention of only getting one- there was a big debate if a girl or boy would be better for our family. Down the rabbit hole of research we went weight the attributes and drawbacks of both. In the end, we decided to get one of each (ha!) but we learned quite a bit then and even more now as we've had our precious dogs with us several years. I'll share the scoop as I sprinkle in 4 week puppy portraits.
Here's Mister Woody!
Let's talk boys first. The main differences we've seen are size, companionability and playfulness.
Here's Buzz!
Size: Male Golden Retrievers are going to be larger than females. Tucker is barrel chested with a lovely large head, whereas Winnie is sleeker all around. Part of this is due to their breeding (Tucker's parents were fluffier and bigger chested, Winnie's parents were slightly shorter haired and streamlined, which holds more with the Canadian variety of Goldens.) But that said, the boys are going to be bigger at maturity, which is 2 years.
Here's Mister Tigger!
Let's get into companionability and what I mean by that. We know that Goldens are THE BEST companions as a breed. Here's where the male/female difference comes in, though. Along with the wonderful traits of golden retrievers that both equally posess, males tend to be everybody's best friend, while females may gravitate towards one family member more than the rest. Who gets to be that person? Generally the one who feeds her and spends most time with her, so if you want to get "favorite person" status, you know what to do.
Does that mean that a female isn't as good as a general family dog? Nope. Winnie is just as patient and happy to be around everyone as Tucker is. She tends to be a bit more assertive about what she wants. Tucker? Well, he's just happy to be here. :)
But let's talk about snuggability, because that's something most everyone wants in a golden: a snuggle buddy. Great news: They are the gold metal champions of snuggling! Whether male or female, you'll have a dog that craves being around you and always ready for a good cuddle session.
Peter Pan, everyone!
Playfulness: Just like humans, males tend to stay playful longer than females. If you're looking for a dog to act mature, a girl is your best choice. If you're looking for a sweet goofball, a boy is an excellent choice. Dogs reach adulthood at 2 years, but boys are going to be young at heart longer than girls.
Speaking of girls, let's see our gals.
Here's Miss Rapunzel!
Sweet Miss Minnie!
The lovely Miss Jessie!
The regal Miss Elsa!
And the radiant Miss Belle!
So is a boy or a girl right for you?
Considering the slight size difference, playfulness and companionability, I recommend going with your gut. Whether you're able to meet our puppies in person or see then in videos, trust your intuition. What your gut says is generally the best decision to make.
The puppies personalities are starting to come out and they are a SHEER delight! If you're thinking about selecting from this litter, contact us to make a puppy playdate or a time to visit over the phone or zoom. We're always happy to answer any questions and talk!
