Puppy Naming Guide and 7 week portraits

When it comes to naming your new fur baby, there are more ways to go than you can cook shrimp. I'll share some helpful tips to select a name that resonates with you, matches your puppy's personality and keeps life -and calling your dog- simple. (Pictured above, Buzz with our baby, Parrish.)

Buzz...

Buzz...

And more Buzz. This little guy will love you to infinity and beyond. He has a winningly playful personality, enjoys a good snuggle and is ready to move his adorable little body, bounding in little puppy jumps across the lawn. If you're ready for a true companion, Buzz is perfect for you.

Admittedly, the names we've given the puppies were chosen by our kids and only intended for our amusement, so start getting creative thinking about a name that works for you and your pup. Here's the first tip to my puppy naming guide.

  1. The Holler Test: Can you yell for your dog in a public place and feel solid? If the name doesn't make you blush, get tongue-tied or isn't too similar to another word you'd rather not say among strangers, then you're close to a winner! This works for kids and pets names. My husband calls it the playground test and he's helped eliminated several names that struck me as debonair and refined, but once hollered across the yard seemed more pretentious than elegant. HA!

Here's Miss Belle!

Miss Belle is a sweetheart that will tame any beast, no matter how wild. She can hold her own and run with the big dogs, but it's that classic Golden charm that will steal your heart.

My second tip for naming your new fur baby:

2) Reflect their personality. Though this is a human example, it works: When I announced to my mother that we were naming our first born Wilder, she wasn't thrilled. "Aren't you afraid he'll be, well, wild? Wouldn't you rather something like Serenity?" I guffawed dismissively, "No, mom. Naming him Wilder won't make him wild." Little did I know.... Wilder did turn out to be a bit on the crazy side until age 12 but perhaps it was my own intuition that knew he was going to be a flavorful individual, instead of the name having anything to do with forming his character. Still, I wouldn't have named him anything else.

So, when it comes to your dog, I recommend selecting a name that resonates with their personality -or at least gives you all the warm fuzzies when you say it.

Miss Elsa.

Enough cuteness to thaw a frozen heart, Miss Elsa is a bundle of fun loving! She's smart as a whip and spunky, as well as being a seasoned snugglebug. She'll be great with children and I'm sure with other animals. Get your bag of tricks, Elsa's ready to learn!

My third tip for naming your new puppy:

3) Keep It Simple. Reginald Merriman the Third may be charming or hilarious, but you're going to pick something short and simple to call him and, most likely, he'll be plain ol' Reggie. If you like it and it fits him, go for it!

Next, in keeping it simple, be sure it doesn't sound too similar to other names in your household. I have a daughter named Waverley and while pregnant a few babies back I fell in love with the name Everleigh. Buuuut, obviously too similar. Even names with alliteration can present a challenge -we have 2 Ws, 2 Ts and 2 Ps for our kids and it can be tough getting the right name between the letters (but mainly I blame my brain.) Funny enough, I've never called the kids the dogs' names or visa versa, despite having a W and a T. What does this mean for you? I don't know, I'm just sharing. I'd recommend that if you have a Spitz, you don't get a Spotz -although, that does sound pretty cute.

You'll know what's simple for you. When you say your dog's name aloud, it will ring in your heart and you'll just know it's perfect.

Miss Jessie

Jessie is as peppy and tenderhearted as her namesake, Jessie the Cowgirl from "Toy Story." She's our biggest and lightest girl; such a gorgeous fluffball! If you're ready for a forever friend, a lady who will always want to hang out, snuggle and play, Jessie's got your number.

Peter Pan, my heart!

He'll sprinkle pixie dust and take you to the second star to the right and straight on 'til morning, this boy. Peter Pan is quite a special, gentle soul. He's the calmest boy with a lighter coat and the most winning personality. Chill and loveable, that's Peter Pan.

Meet Tigger!

He's bouncy, trouncy, fun-fun-fun-fun-fun until he's in your arms and melts like butter! The darkest and smallest of the litter, he's just adorable and a great addition to a family or an active household. Male pups will be more playful longer than females, but because we're talking about Goldens here, you'll see a LOT of chill floor rug time that they exhibit.

Sweet Miss Minnie, reserved.

Minnie is utterly charming and a family favorite with her fluffy ears and adorable, unique left front paw. The word "Happy" sums her up beautifully -and she makes you happy whenever you see her.

Miss Rapunzel, reserved. Like her Disney namesake, Rapunzel is smart, sweet and zippy! A beautiful golden coat, she's of average size and quite perfect.

Last, but not least, is Woody, reserved.

Woody is a classic. He rounds out the litter with his robust presence and adds and extra dose of sweetness. A beautiful lighter coat and nice, sturdy size makes him a simply gorgeous specimen.

If you're thinking about adding one of our litter to your household and want chat, please contact me. I'm delighted to answer any questions or help determine which pup would be a great fit for you. Dogs are a serious commitment and we want to help you be prepared as best as possible for a great start with your new friend!

Sincerely,

Kelly and family
